jimetta rose 300x300 Interview: Introducing Jimetta Rose, the barbers daughter...

Jimetta Rose is nothing but soulfull. She released at the beginning of the year her debut album The Barber’s Daughter and all I can say is that Jimetta can sing! Jimetta can rhyme, and you will fall for Jimetta’s universe. She can be a lover with songs like « Glory On Us » or « Sweet Necessity », she’s a rebel with « I Got God » , she’s also revolutionary with « America (Revisited) ». She may be all those things but one thing is sure, she is talented. Her debut album has been on heavy rotation since I got it.If you have a list of artists to watch, Jimetta Rose is a Must Listen

INTERVIEW

AYNIS: Hello Jimetta, for those who are not familiar with you and your music, could you introduce yourself?

Jimetta Rose: My name is Jimetta Rose pronounced (Jim- met- tah) and I am a singer/songwriter from Los Angeles. Also known as ‘The Barber’s Daughter, also known as Jimmy girl. Lol Basically a flower child revolutionary trying to heal the world with music.

AYNIS: How did you get into singing?

JR: I have been singing for as long as I remember. My mama claims I came out the womb crooning…and I guess that’s one of those « mama » stories that you just gotta take for truth lol. I sang my first solo at 2 or 3 at the church I grew up in.

AYNIS: What are your influences? What artists inspired you?

JR: My influences are quite vast but if I had to handpick a few I’d say that 1930s jazz, 1970s funk and soul music, and hip hop are my greatest musical influences. The artists I admire and that in turn inspire me are Sarah Vaughn, Nina Simone, Donny Hathaway, Dizzie Gillespie, Roberta Flack, Chaka Khan, Bjork, Erykah Badu, and The Clark Sisters for their impeccable harmony and blend. I really admire some of my peers as well such as Georgia Anne Muldrow, Muhsinah, Amy Winehouse, and Fatima.

« Life Unfolds »

AYNIS:  How and when did you first met Georgia Anne Muldrow? And what is it like to work with her?

JR: I met Georgia in 2005 outside of a club out here called The Little Temple (a popular venue on the underground hip hop/ soul scene). We were the only two women outside in the cipher and I sang a song to a track produced by Dibiase, she came up to me afterwards and introduced herself. The rest is history…next thing you know we’re in the studio baking carrot cake cupcakes and recording America. Georgia is like the sister I never had so working with her is really natural for me. She is a musical genius and she inspires me to do the little things in the back of my mind that maybe I wouldn’t usually do with a producer I’m less comfortable with.

AYNIS Can you tell us more about your album The barber’s Daughter? The recording process? What inspired you?

JR: The album is named « The Barber’s Daughter » and that is because this is an introduction to me. My father passed away in 2008 and he was my world…I decided to do something constructive with my crazy array of emotions and create an album. I could no longer procrastinate on my dream or it would remain just a dream. The songs were written over a 5 year span and so the cohesive-ness (did I just make up a word?) that I am aiming for on my future recordings may be missing, but the project is dear to my heart simply because I did my best (knowing nothing of putting an album out) and I definitely put my heart into it. Many of the songs were inspired by personal life experiences or just me expressing my views of the world.
AYNIS: You sing about values and real issues in songs such as “I Got God” for example, which is a great song. What inspired you to write those songs, especially one of my favorites « America (Revisited) « ?

JR: I’m tired of folks singing « sleep music » or lullabies…basically music that keeps the people sleeping. There’s no excuse anymore as far as I’m concerned…Artists need to be artists again, forget the formula (anybody can make cookies with a recipe) let the creativity flow. I respect what other artists do, I just choose to put real life in my music since I believe that’s what enables it to breakthrough language barriers and live on beyond the life of its creator. This is God work, plain and simple.

 » America (Revisited) »

AYNIS: With which artists would you like to collaborate?

JR: I’d love to work with Foreign Exchange, Coultrain, Platinum Pied Pipers, Georgia Anne Muldrow (on a full length project), Shafiq Husayn (on a full length project), Dead Prez, whoever is putting truth in the music chord by chord, and word by word.

AYNIS: What are your projects? A tour? Maybe in Europe?

JR: I am one of the featured vocalists/ songwriters on Proh Mic’s upcoming release, alongside Georgia Anne Muldrow and Coultrain. (Such an honor) I wrote a song on there called « Joy: Ode to the Trees ».  Also Pinboardblog.com has a compilation cd coming out soon that will include a new song from me called « Right On Time ». My band « The Beautiful Thing » and I are getting set to record a live album and also the official follow up to « The Barber’s Daughter » (I don’t have a name for it just yet). On the non-music tip, some friends and I started our company NAPPY NATION as our way to be the change we want to see in the world…check us out at www.iamnappy.com we are in the process of getting a tour together to tour the states first but Europe is on the agenda definitely.

AYNIS: Thank you very much for your time! What would you like to say to our readers?

JR: Dare to dream. Dare to live. Dare to be original. Because you are blessed, beautiful, and capable just as YOU are. Thank you for this lovely interview hopefully it’s a good read without too many typos lol. Peace.

Thank you again for your time!! :)
